Is It OK to Think About Pregnancy in Your 20s?

A growing number of women in their 20s are starting to be more conscious about how to get pregnant. If you are one of these women, this article will provide you with some information that may help you understand more about pregnancy; and whether you really should be thinking about it seriously at this point in your life.

The first thing you need to know is that there is indeed an “age game”. Although you may manage to look a lot younger than you truly are, you can never slow down the aging of your ovaries. Do not get too busy with money-making and then push your pregnancy plans till you’re 40. It’s really not supposed to work that way.

Remember this: Your ovaries have a life span. You need healthy eggs to make babies. However, eggs also become scarce as you age. Although females are born with millions of eggs, most of them do not mature.

When you reach adolescence, you would be down with just half of the original number of eggs. This shall continue to decrease each year. And although some eggs will manage to survive, not all of them can be good enough to make babies. Even at your prime age, half of all your eggs may have abnormalities in their chromosomal make up. In addition, as you age, the proportion of eggs that have genetic problems also increases. And unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s just the natural course of life.

Your fertility peaks in your 20’s. Most women are very fertile between the ages of 23 and 31. By 31, the fertility begins to drop more quickly. When you reach 35, the drop even becomes faster. This is the reason why one in four women who are 35 and above encounter some troubles getting pregnant.

Of course, there are some women who can still have babies even when they are already in their 40s. However, this is not a very common occurrence. Generally, a woman can still conceive until about ten years before menopause. However, no woman can exactly tell when her menopausal age would be, right?

Some people say that fertility patterns are hereditary so if your mom managed to have you at 43, perhaps you could have a baby too at that age. However, there is no scientific guarantee on this.

Basically, it is never too early to think about how to get pregnant. Aside from considering the life span of the ovaries, you also have to consider your physical abilities. Even if your reproductive system could produce a baby at 45, imagine how you are going to manage childcare by that time. By age 30, many women can already attest to the various physical changes they are going through. What’s more when then reach their 40s? Would you still be fit enough to take care of your child? Isn’t it too late for diapers and feeding bottles? Consider these things when you reach your 20s. Thinking about them doesn’t mean you’re having a baby anyway. Just plan your future wisely.
